We see it in movies and on TV all of the time. Someone you don’t know comes knocking on your door with a folder or briefcase in their hand. You know there are some outstanding financial situations from the past, but yet, you still try to hide. The person asks for you and you tell them there’s no one here by that name. You both stand there, continuing to argue back and forth about your identity and the proper address.
Why do people try to hide when they are being served? I never understood this, because if someone owed me lots of money, I would be knocking on their door, too! If you know you owe someone, just pay them, or at least make arrangements to pay. I’m not about to look over my shoulder everywhere I go, trying to avoid someone chasing me with papers!
I’ve seen people do this to businesses when they try to collect their money. After many attempts to contact you, they send someone to serve you and you want to act all surprised. Like it’s their fault that you owe them. It gets old after a while, especially if you’re grown.
Don’t max out a credit card if you don’t want to be served.
Pay your bills, if you don’t want to be served.
Don’t overdraft your bank account and then switch banks, if you don’t want to be served.
Basically, pay your debt. More than likely, it’s something that you agreed to and you should hold up your end of the agreement.
Don’t ever let it get to the point where you will be served, but if you are, just answer the door and own up to your part of the responsibility.
